When dealing with an amputated extremity, the proper handling procedures are crucial to increase the chances of successful reattachment. The correct approach is to keep the amputated part dry and place it in a sealed plastic bag, then put that bag on ice. This method minimizes tissue damage by preserving the viability of the cells, as cold temperatures slow down metabolic processes and reduce the risk of necrosis.

Storing the amputated extremity in a refrigerator may not provide sufficient cooling required for preservation, as the temperature may not be low enough to effectively retard metabolic activity. Wrapping it in a towel and allowing it to sit at room temperature can lead to rapid degradation of the tissue, and if disposed of immediately, the possibility for reattachment is entirely forfeited. Proper handling with the sealed bag and ice provides the best chance for medical personnel to successfully attempt reattachment procedures.
